The El Paso Salvation Amy is launching a new fundraiser today to help bring attention to the homeless population it serves on a year-round basis. The Soup Kitchen is a luncheon series that will take place one day each month, between October and March. The series will kick-off with their inaugural luncheon today, at 12 noon at The Salvation Army located at 4300 East Piasano.

The series aims to give attended an insight to the work conducted year-round at the multiple Salvation Army shelters around El Paso. El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar will serve as the fist honorary chair of the luncheon series. "I am very humbled to serve as the first Honorary Chair of this event to help those who find themselves in such dire situations. I cannot imagine the hardships they face," said Escobar.

A different Honorary Chair will host the luncheon each month. The Honorary Chair for the November luncheon will be announced at the October event.

Rose Lucero, Director of Resource Development and Community Relations, feels that creating this event will bring a unique experience to the public which they may not have otherwise. “Once the public has the chance to see the work we do for the homeless community, it helps break the taboo about contributing to programs affiliated with the homeless,” said Lucero.

The idea of the Soup Kitchen Series stemmed from the large numbers of people that are fed through The Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen which serves single men and women who live in the shelter, as well as people from off the street. “Soup is symbolic of so many good things. It provides you comfort and makes you feel better when you don’t feel well. My guess is that is the same feeling the homeless experience when they get a hot meal provided by The Salvation Army. So it just seems natural to name the event after our Soup Kitchen.”

Luncheon attendees will be treated to a hearty bowl of soup provided by a local restaurant and dessert by a local sweet shop. Seating is limited to 100 people at a minimum contribution of $50 per person. To purchase tickets for future events, please call (915) 544-9811 or RSVP to
