The New Mexico Department of Health has a warning for families that plan to give baby chicks of other baby birds to their children for Easter.

They advise you to use extreme caution in order to avoid Salmonella infection. Salmonella is often present in the droppings of chicks and other baby birds. Early symptoms of Salmonella in people include fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
