The City of Las Cruces is taking a different approach to senior centers with the opening of the Sage Cafe in the eastern part of town.

The Cafe is located off of Highway 70 and Porter Drive in what has been considered an underserved part of the city.

"That's been one of the concerns that the city's had and we have had comments from the citizens since we annexed the area in 1986," said Interim Director Community & Cultural Services David Dollohan.

Dollohan said the cafe was modeled after a Chicago concept of creating a restaurant with a comfortable atmosphere, casual activities and reasonably priced food.

Inside the building, vibrant colors bring life to the three main parts of the building in a modern atmosphere.

The center features a large room that can be used for light recreational activities, a small library and a restaurant serving barbecue.

Jerry Gunderson, a volunteer with AARP and the city's senior programs, said the cafe will afford them plenty of future opportunities.

"I's going to be a good addition and I'm sure AARP is going to want to do some similar things here within the facility."

Gunderson said he stopped by to look at the facility for himself as a possible venue for a January meeting on reverse mortgages.

During his visit he also had a plate of barbecue, made to order by Barbecue Heaven who is leasing the kitchen from the city.

"It was really good," Gunderson said. "I really enjoyed it."

Dollohan said the cafe is one of the city's many efforts to continue providing services to the area.

BBQ Heaven’s scheduled hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and closed Mondays.
