Rotary Club Awards $21K To Children's Advocacy Center
EL PASO — The Rotary Club of West El Paso will be presenting a $21,000 check to the Advocacy Center for the Children of El Paso on Monday, Feb. 27 at the Holiday Inn on Sunland Park at noon.
“Our Club selected the Advocacy Center as the recipient of this grant because we realized what an important resource the Advocacy Center is for the Community of El Paso” stated Chava Gonzalez, Grant Writer and International Services Director for the West El Paso Rotary Club.
The Advocacy Center for the Children of El Paso, operating for 16 years, provides support to children who have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse. The majority of children at the Advocacy Center have been molested, raped or exploited through pornography. According to the center, the program helps about 40 children per month.
“Sexual abuse is an under reported crime because most of the abuse occurs at home” stated Susan Oliva, Founding Executive Director of the Advocacy Center. “If someone calls 911, and it is a horrific crime against a child, we will get involved so that the child will not have to relive the experience over and over again.
The grant being presented will help upgrade and equip two forensic interview rooms. Some of the money will also be used to buy clothing for the children. Most of the children who are taken to the Center only have the clothes on their back. The center will provide one week’s worth of clothing when the child is placed in a foster home.
