EL PASO — New crime statistics released by the El Paso Police Dept. may be signs of economic hardship in El Paso.
Compared to this same point in time last year, robberies have gone up 21 percent, burglaries by 3 percent and burglary of a vehicle by one percent.
Yet police have also seen a major decrease in other crimes.
Murders are down 60 percent, assaults by 12 percent, and vehicle thefts by 41 percent.
Across the city crime is down overall by 9 percent.
The Westside, Pebble Hills area, and Central saw double-digit drops, with 18 percent, 11 percent, and 10 percent respectively. Crime in the Northeast is also down 4 percent.
The Mission Valley is the only area seeing an uptick, with a 3 percent increase.
