Richardson Withdraws from Obama's Cabinet

January 5, 2009 - 8:07am

New Mexico Governor, Bill Richardson, is withdrawing as the secretary of commerce amid a political scandal. The scandal stems from a grand jury investigation into how some of Richardson's political donors won a state contract deal worth more than $1million.

A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico transportation contract.

Richardson withdrew his name name today, saying the ongoing investigation will not be cleared up in time for the inauguration. He went on to say he does not want to hold up important work on Obama's economic recovery plan.

Some New Mexicans have mixed opinions on him returning as the state's leader.

"In my opinion, he's a good governor, we like him and he can go on to do great things here," Terri McBerayer said.

"I am very sorry to hear that he is coming back, I wanted to get rid of him," said a man from Las Cruces.

With just weeks until inauguration day, we're told it is too late to get anyone confirmed for secretary of commerce seat, that decision will have to come once Barack Obama is sworn in.
