New Mexico Governor, Bill Richardson, spoke publicly for the first time after withdrawing his name to be the next Secretary of Commerce.
The New Mexico Governor dodged questions about the federal investigation but did say the decision he made was best for the country.
"It was my idea to withdraw. I withdrew because I felt, I didn't want a possible inquiry going on to delay the enormous progress we need to rebuild this economy," Gov. Richardson said at a press conference.
The withdrawal stems from a federal probe into how a financial firm, secured more than $1.4 million in state business after making political contributions to the governor.
Richardson would not take specific questions about the investigation but did say he was disappointed he couldn't serve the country in Washington.
"There are a lot of ways in which I thought I could help this country in a time of financial crisis," Gov. Richardson said. "Sometimes your own dreams and plans must take a back seat for what is best for the nation."
Newschannel 9 has learned Richardson hired a prominent lawyer in New Mexico to represent him until the investigation is over.
