EL PASO (KTSM) — The Reynolds home shelter helps hundreds of homeless families and women in El Paso every year by providing them a place to stay. One of their current projects is expanding their service and they’re asking the community to step up and help.
Alejandra Villa arrived at the Reynolds home several months ago after losing her home and job. She is one of many who have received assistance from the shelter, as she describes it going through a homeless situation can be extremely difficult.
"I got kicked out of the place where I was living with my kids and it was kind of hard because I was like where I'm I going to go I have no one else here in El Paso and they told me about this place and they just took me in me and my kids," Villa said.
The reality is now different for Alejandra, she joined dozens of families that once went through the same and are now back on their feet to share experiences, celebrate the help and motivate each other.
"Like about a week ago I started my job you know and they also provide transportation for you to get to and from your job and is just it's helped me because before I couldn't be able to keep a job because of the daycare situation and all this things they just help me with everything," Villa added.
But this fall festival wasn't only about food, music and games organizers say the need in the community keeps growing and expanding the help is essential.
This year the shelter is working to house more families by building new rooms for those who need it and help is welcomed.
"You can probably see that the houses and construction is already going and it’s always wonderful to house more people especially now that the winter is around the corner,” volunteer Carlos Castañeda said.
"Everybody here is donating their time their money their efforts it's just amazing to see the outcome and the support the community gives the Reynolds home."
The construction of these new rooms is expected to be completed before the winter. For donations and information you can visit www.reynoldshome.org/home
