Several neighborhoods were evacuated because of the Santa Teresa fire that took place on Monday. Community members banded together at the Sunland Park City Sports Complex as the fire burned on.

"It's real dry down there, so I don't know if they're going to be able to get in under control or not.," Andy Padilla, a Santa Teresa resident told us.

"It's really scary," Maria Gonzalez, a Sunland Park resident, exclaimed.

Dozens and dozens of people gazed at the flames hoping that Firefighters would contain them soon. Mother Nature's forces did not seem to be helping.

"The wind is blowing away from here, so it's blowing it toward the river and the river is dry so it's not going to jump the river," Padilla said.

The fire blew towards El Paso, away from the complex, but concern was growing for the safety of residents who lived near the fire.

"Our community is pretty impressed because we've never seen anything like that. and we're pretty much scared because we live nearby and we also have friends that live on the other side," Gonzalez said.

However, residents still looked towards the fire, some even braved a few steps closer to the fence. As the flames got brighter, larger and closer, authorities asked people to push back from the fence for their safety.

"As close as it is, there's not much below here that will let it come up this way. If I saw it coming this way then I definitely would move," Padilla told us.
