EL PASO - The outrage continues, as local leaders demand to know why the UT system canceled a high-profile boxing match at UTEP, because of security concerns.

Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-El Paso) said there is an effort to discredit El Paso, and paint it as a war zone. He said he spoke with UT's Chancellor, Francisco Cigarroa, who told him it was his decision to pull the plug on the match at the Sun Bowl, based on recommendations from his head of security.

Rep. Reyes told Newschannel 9 he will fight to keep the fight in El Paso. He organized an emergency caucus meeting with other border leaders, to get on the same page.

"I've asked Congressman Henry Cuellar and Congressman Ruben Hinojosa, who both represent border districts, to call Dr. Cigarroa and urge him to reconsider that decision,” said Rep. Reyes.

The boxing match between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Andy Lee was supposed to take place at the Sun Bowl on June 16th.

As of now, it may take place in San Antonio or Houston.

I don't think everybody in El Paso knows that there is a "clause" in our state constitution that would allow our state to further subdivide into as many as five smaller entities/states of it so would happen to choose to. I think that given all this unfair negative support for as many years as our city has, now would be a perfect time to consider this option (seperate from the rest of the state of Texas and become the 51st state in the country under the name El Paso! Texas politicians are never going to learn to respect us otherwise - let me be the first to say.
