Recap: Firefighters Battle Structure Fire

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 - 11:19pm

Emergency crews rushed to extinguish a fire at an abandoned building on Piedras and Rosa that used to be a family shelter called "Dame La Mano." The blaze at the building was a "Condition 4," meaning it is one of the more dangerous fires that can happen.

Just before 1:30pm, El Paso firefighters got a call about heavy smoke and fire coming from the 2nd floor of the building.

Eighteen units and 47 firefighters responded to the call. Using heavy supplies of water, they contained the fire within 15 minutes. Nobody was injured.

The fire caused an estimated $50,000 dollars in damages. The owner says he purchased the building for less than $200,000 three years ago and still has a mortgage on it.

The City shut the shelter down a year ago because of code violations. The building's owner insists he was trying to do something positive for the community but the City denied him the permits he needed to continue operating the shelter

Fire investigators are investigating how the fire started.
