Protect your pipes during freezing temperatures
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — We're expecting below freezing temperatures, which can wreak havoc on your home and what's in it.
We all know about the P's: People, pets, plants and pipes.
During cold and freezing weather, we need to pay special attention to the elderly and homeless to make sure they're in from the elements.
We need to bring our pets and plants inside. There's an often forgotten part of our house that needs attention too
An associate from Home Depot stopped by the station earlier to show us what to do to protect our pipes.
There are products like pipe wrap insulation and special kinds of faucet covers that will help prevent your pipes and faucets from freezing.
It might seem like a lot of work, but it very well could be worth it.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so it's a lot better to go ahead and wrap those pipes instead of them breaking and then you have to repair them," said Home Depot associate Jim Rapp.
If water lines break because of frozen pipes, water in the house goes out. Without protection on pipes, it could create an icy mess on the streets, if the water line breaks.
Leaving faucets running isn't a sure fire way to keep your pipes flowing either.
They could still freeze and it wastes water too.
