An El Paso priest and former Fort Bliss chaplain charged with a sex crime in New Jersey has yet to be arrested, because prosecutors say they hope he will turn himself in.

Fr. Philip Briganti, 67, was charged earlier this month with criminal sexual contact, after authorities say an incident after a wedding he officiated.

According to Morris County prosecutors, Briganti was riding on a bus traveling back to the wedding party's hotel in Paterson, N.J. when he allegedly touched an adult man.

The El Paso Catholic Diocese has removed his priestly faculties, meaning he is not allowed to minister within the diocese.

He was the pastoral vicar at St. Raphael's Parish.

If Briganti does not turn himself in, prosecutors tell NewsChannel 9 they will then enlist local authorities to arrest him and extradite him.
