Michael Steele Steps Down After Losing Support

MARYLAND— The Republican National Committee has chosen Reince Priebus to head their committee after beating Michael Steele and Maria Cino in the election.

Priebus received the 85 necessary votes in the seventh round of voting on Friday. Former Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis and GOP operative Maria Cino came in second and third, respectively. Priebus won the vote after Michael Steele, chairman for the Republican National Committee, stepped aside Friday and asked that the committee and his former supporters support Maria Cino.

Priebus will now be chairman for two years.

Steele, who led the RNC for two years, thanked supporters and received a standing ovation after asking his supporters “to stand with me in supporting Maria Cino as next chairman of this party.”

Steele was a controversy-plagued chairman while in office as the RNC dealt with massive debt problems.
