Powerball Jackpot Grows
SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - A day before a $325 million Powerball drawing, people aren't lining up to purchase lottery tickets like in years past.
The Powerball is currently played in 42 states nationally. Texas was added to the list January 2010.
Rafael Ramirez, a manager at Sunland Park Grocery, has seen sales go down at his store when Texas began selling powerball tickets.
"Since they changed it to El Paso, a lot of people go down there instead of coming to New Mexico," Ramirez said.
The New Mexico Lottery has awarded more than 75,000 scholarships and has raised over $500 million for education in the state.
Vera Box who's an educator at a Santa Teresa school said she supports the lottery because she knows the money goes to a good cause.
"The money comes back to the kids, that's what it's all about," Box said.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510. Tickets for the $325 million drawing will be sold until 8:00 p.m. in Texas and New Mexico.
