Lawmakers in Austin have some other hard decisions in front of them.

One proposal calls for getting rid of some Texas Education Grants.

The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund says this could have a devastating effect on Latino students.

Two out every three UTEP students use financial aid.

If there are cuts at the state level, Craig Westman from UTEP Enrollment says, the university may have to come up with the money itself for some of those students.

"That's what we really want to be able to do. Take those dollars and really look at how we're using our financial aid resources to help students with need. So, we've been talking about that but, it's very hard to even begin discussions until we know what the state is doing," Westman said.

The Texas House will debate the budget this weekend.
