A national manufacturing institute was at UTEP Wednesday to kick off a more than $2 million dollar engineering project.

Representatives with America Makes were at the University's Keck Center for 3-D Innovations to celebrate the UTEP-led research efforts to design the next generation 3-D printer for aerospace systems. Researchers will focus on creating a 3-D printer that can fabricate multi-material aerospace components.

"We're very excited because this is an initiative coming directly from Barack Obama to improve 3-D printing." said Mireya Perez, Research Administrator at the Keck Center.

UTEP's Keck Center received the $2.2 million dollar grant back in January with the ultimate goal of manufacturing unmanned drones.
