EL PASO (KTSM) — They almost had it. The UTEP Miner women come from behind -- but came up short in Saturday's WNIT Championship.
The final score: Rutgers 56, UTEP 54.
Fans were obviously disappointed about losing, but everyone said almost the same exact thing: win or lose, they will always support the Miners.
"It was just full of energy and excitement,” said Jackie Kille, describing the atmosphere inside Don Haskins. “I mean everybody in the crowd was going. It was awesome. You couldn't have asked for a better turn out from today game."
The game brought out more than 12,000 fans to the Don Haskins Center. It sold out in just hours and the UTEP fans inside showed how happy they were to be part of history.
"It was exhilarating. We were all excited,” said Cesar Carmona. “I was on my feet the entire time. Nobody else was sitting down the entire game. It was great."
Some even came from out of town just to watch the game in person.
"A four hour drive just to see the game. Fans were electric. Win or lose, we will always love our UTEP Miners," said Adrian Escajeda.
And that is the same attitude most of the fans had after the tough loss Saturday. For them, it was much more than a just a game.
"It’s a big event. I hope it brings more recognition to El Paso,” said Guillermo Perez. “They can see that we have good fans here. We support our team we will be back next year."
As one fan put it - win or lose - the Miner omen made UTEP fans and El Paso proud.
"When do you hear about something like this going on in El Paso,” said Kille. “Women's basketball game, we made it to the championship. Granted we didn't win, but we made it. We came here. This is what we need to do for El Paso. You need to come out and support El Paso."
Even though it wasn't the outcome the Miners wanted, they still gained plenty of fans.
"It's disappointing of course,” said Carmona. “But at the end of it they gave us a great season, took us to the post season. I can't complain. Go miners!”
