El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Earlier this week, a call for help went out on Facebook for a group of kids at El Paso's Center Against Family Violence. The kids were in need of swimsuits so that they could go swimming at El Paso's City Pools.
We reported on the need at CAFV earlier this week, and the community immediately opened up their hearts and their wallets to help the kids out. Several community members and organizations such as the Drowning Prevention Coalition, the Boy Scouts and even members of the Desert Shark's Swim Club began taking up collections in order to ensure all of the children at CAFV had enough swimsuits.
And the help didn't stop there.
"We been very lucky enough to get a lot of support from the Parks and Recreation. And today, as a matter of fact, today they got to go swimming at one of their locations. So, the kids are very excited and very happy that they get to go swimming." said CAFV Children's Service's Manager Claudia Renteria.
The Drowning Prevention Coalition is also offering swim lessons to any of the children at the shelter who needs them. The Center Against Family Violence says that it is always in need of other items and donations for summer activities, including cash for outings.
The center says that they have a network with other shelters throughout the city and all of the swimsuits and donations will go to people in our community who need them.
For those who haven't already dropped off swimsuits or other donations, you can still do so by stopping by their resource center at 580 Giles or call them at 593-1000. We will also be collecting swimsuits at our NewsChannel9 studios, located at 801 N. Oregon through 10 a.m. Friday morning.
