El Paso Zoo wins 'Bags to Benches' challenge
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The City of El Paso Environmental Services Department (ESD) is proud to announce that the El Paso Zoo has won the first round of the “Bags to Benches” plastic bag recycling challenge and will receive a bench made out of plastic bags.
During the past 7 months, the zoo collected a total of 226 lbs. of plastic bags. ESD placed 10 collection bins in various city departments, ranging from recreation centers to libraries. A total of 610 lbs. of plastic bags were collected at the sites from late September 2013 through early March of this year.
Plastic bags collected through this program will be sent to the Trex Company, who will then create the bench from the recycled plastic. ESD teamed up with the Trex Company, the country’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products, to host the “Bags to Benches” plastic bag recycling challenge.
The second round of the “Bags to Benches” challenge is set to begin in late March 2014. ESD encourages the community to continue collecting and bringing bags to the current sites along with new sites that will be announced soon. Drop-off locations may be found on the Environmental Services website www.elpasotexas.gov/environmental-services
