If one of your New Year's Resolutions is to wipe your slate clean and start fresh, the El Paso Library is offering an amnesty period for you to reach your goal.

The library is offering amnesty from January 3 through January 18, 2014. During the amnesty period, anyone with overdue library materials may return them to the library without penalty. Fines on overdue materials will not be charged during the period, as long as the materials are returned in good condition.

The El Paso Library uses this period annually to encourage citizens to return their materials to the library and start using the library again. Any citizen who returns overdue materials will have their borrowing privileged reinstated. Anyone wanting to take advantage of the amnesty period should return overdue items to any public library branch and notify staff that they would like to take advantage of the amnesty.

The Library will also be accepting Food for Fines during this same period. Any library patron who doesn't have any outstanding materials, but has outstanding fines can pay down $1 worth of fines for every can of food or non-perishable food item donated, up to $5 per library account.

All food donations will be distributed as part of the 14th Annual MLK Canned Food Drive. The El Paso Public Library encourages their customers to donate canned goods for those in El Paso who do not have enough to eat. It is estimated that 1 in 3 children in El Paso struggle with hunger every day. Hungry children have a much more difficult time staying engaged and focused in school.

The food collected as part of the Food for Fines program, as well as all food collected through the MLK Canned Food Drive will be used to replenish
