VATICAN CITY— John Paul II is closer to sainthood after being Pope Benedict approved a French nun's miracle.

Pope Benedict XVI approved Sister Marie Simon Pierre's claim that she was cured of Parkinson's after praying to Pope John Paul II. Sister Pierre prayed to John Paul two months after his death, and she said her Parkinson's disappeared. The former Pope also suffered from the disease.

After a long investigation, Pope Benedict certified Sister Pierre's claim Friday, allowing Pope John Paul II to be beatified in a ceremony on May 1.

Beatification is the last step to sainthood, although one more miracle must be certified in order for John Paul to reach full sainthood.
