Police: Man Attacks Officer Over Fireworks Complaint

Las Cruces Police arrested Alex Martinez after punching an officer while responding to a fireworks complaint Sunday night.

Detectives learned that Martinez, 36, confronted neighbors after becoming angry that they had set off fireworks. A responding police officer then tried to get Martinez to calm down however Martinez continued to yell before advancing on the police officer with clenched fists, according to the police. Witnesses stated that Martinez then attacked the officer by punching him several times before being subdued and placed into custody.

The officer sustained only minor injuries as a result of the attack.

Martinez was charged with assault and battery on a peace officer, resisting an officer and was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
