EL PASO - Students just trying to head to class at UTEP ran into a flipped over SUV in the middle of the street surrounded by El Paso police officers this morning.

“I don't think this has ever happened here at UTEP," said student Angel Jauregui.

Police shut down Rim Road near Hawthorne Street for most of the morning, forcing some students to find a new way to class.

“That's the path I normally take to class. It's going to take longer to find a new route," said another student, Daniel Rosas.

Police said an officer tried to pull the SUV over just before 4:00 a.m. on I-10 at the Porfirio Diaz exit. Instead of stopping - police said the driver stepped on it. Police gave chase. At Shuster, the SUV came to a stop after hitting a curb and taking out a light pole. That's when investigators said the driver put it in reverse and rammed the officer and his police car.

“The officer discharged two rounds from his duty weapon at the SUV which continued to flee onto UTEP property,” said Darrel Petry, spokesperson for the El Paso Police Department.

Then, police said a woman jumped out of the SUV and was taken into custody. Police finally caught up with the driver at Rim Road and Hawthorne Street. That's where they found the flipped over SUV in the middle of the street.

"Both occupants were taken to UMC. The police officer was taken to Las Palmas," said Petry

Police said none were seriously hurt.

"The major charge is going to be the aggravated assault, when they tried to back up and hit the officer with the vehicle,” said Petry.
