Las Cruces Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening in the 5900 block of Bataan Memorial West in Las Cruces.

LCPD were called to the scene of a possible domestic dispute between a 42-year-old man and a woman near Porter Dr. Initial dispatch reports indicated that someone on the scene may have been armed with a handgun.

The first responding officer located the man who they believed was involved in the incident near the Chucky's Food Mart. Police on the scene saw the man pull what was believed t be a handgun out and point it at officers, at which time responding officers returned fire.

It has since been determined that the gun the man displaced was actually an air pistol made by Umarex which closely resembles an authentic Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun used by many law enforcement agencies. The BB gun is manufactured as a replica and looks nearly identical to the 9mm Smith & Wesson with logos and other markings.

The 42-year-old man was taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

At this time there is no information on whether or not the man who was shot will be facing any charges in connection with the incident. As in standard procedure, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

Police are expected to be investigating the incident throughout the morning. People traveling in the area are encouraged to use an alternate route until the scene re-opens.
