A transfer student from Austria was heading back to his dorm room with cleaning supplies but it was then that victim Achim Schweighofer was struck by a car.

He came to UTEP in August of this year to study one semester at the university.

But just weeks away from completing the term, a vehicle driven by another UTEP student hit him, leaving Schweighofer unconscious in the parking lot of miner village.

“He was like bringing cleaning supplies to clean his room or something like that,” said Hannah Nicholson, UTEP student. “And when I got there he was breathing, but that's it. His eyes were closed and he was unresponsive.”

According to a Nicholson, she believes the student driving the vehicle may have been texting at the same time and that's why she didn't see Schweighofer.

But another student believed it has a lot to do with the curved street that is being blocked by trash cans.

"I guess people just speed on by and behind the dumpsters there’s a real blind spot where you can't really see unless they build another side walk or something,” said Ricardo Camacho. “To be honest I don't feel safe walking on the street or anything. I try to stay away a little bit.”

UTEP President Diana Natalicio released a statement which read, “While we cannot know the depths of their grief the UTEP family will do everything we can to help comfort them.

This was a very unfortunate accident.” Police are still investigating and no additional details have been released.
