EL PASO – Police have released the name of an elderly man who was hit and killed while crossing the street in East El Paso.

Investigators say 82-year-old Ignacio Santiesteban was crossing the 2100 block of Zaragoza when he was hit by two vehicles.

Police say the driver of a Ford F-150, 35-year-old Robert Hernandez, hit Santiesteban around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Another vehicle, described as a Honda, then ran over Santiesteban as he lay in the middle of the road.

The Honda didn't stop.

Hernandez, who did stop, is an El Paso Police officer and was off-duty at the time. A 4-year-old girl who was also in the truck with Hernandez was not hurt.

Investigators say Santiesteban was in a crosswalk.

Police say they'll turn over the case to the District Attorney’s office when their investigation is finished. Anybody with information about the driver of the Honda is asked to call the police Department at 915.832.4400.

I happened to see Mr. Santiesteban next to my car when the traffic stopped, before cops and paramedics got to the scene. This was a horrible accident! I send my heart out to the Santiesteban family. My 15 year old son was with me and we are still having nightmares from the accident. I wished that i could of paid more attention to my sorroundings and help with the car that ran away, but we were in shock. I totally agree with Santiesteban (son), we need more lights in that area!

any lights would be great. it is terrible that everything in this city is trial by error. they dont make it better til someone gets killed. el paso law makers are the worst!

-The street where the elderly man was killed is a very dangerous location where drivers dont slow down!! It would be a very good idea to install lights for traffic to be more controlled. It is a school area as well as residential and I am sure that including myself would appreciate for this crosswalk to be more safe!

Ugh this was such an ugly accident :/ I saw it all& I feel traumatized. Never seen anything like this.

I feel for both the victim and the off-duty police officer. I am glad to hear that he stopped and hope the family of the victim will have the understanding to accept this was an accident.
The officer will have to live with this the rest of his life which will not be easy. That is punishment enough.
