El Paso will look a little like Hollywood next week. The film Bless Me Ultima is making its worldwide premier in the Sun City, and there are hundreds of people who can't wait for the big day to arrive. Preparations are underway at the Plaza Theater. Guest lists are being finalized and the building is getting new paint, all in advance of Monday's world premier.

"It's going to have the feel of everything. The big red carpet coming out because it's set in the 1940's. There will be some old cars and people walking up on the carpet. There will be what you'd expect," said Marina Monsisvais with Barracuda PR, the public relations firm for the theater.

Filmakers say they chose El Paso because of the city's history, location, and also because of the passion shown by the El Paso Arts Committee. As for the movie, it's based on the popular book written in 1972.

Set in Eastern New Mexico, the story revolves around a young man and his relationship with a healer or curandero, named Ultima. It's a movie that promises to put a spotlight on the borderland and it's culture.

"This is going to be our century, the Hispanic century," explained Dr. Armando Gonzalez-Stuart, a doctor of science in alternative medicine at UTEP. Gonzalez-Stuart believes the movie will also open people's minds to the possibilities of alternative medicine. A recent study at UTEP revealed that 70 percent of borderland residents have used some form of alternative medicine, but that's not the case elsewhere in the U.S.

"For some people it's just witchcraft and quackery but for those of us who have studied it more, i think it has a positive impact," Gonzalez-Stuart said.

The film premiers Monday at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theater. The red carpet event begins at 6 p.m.
