EL PASO — Borderland residents will have to pay this year to make the annual pilgrimage up Mount Cristo Rey. For the first time ever, the Mt. Cristo Rey Restoration Committee is asking for a one dollar fee to offset the costs that the city of Sunland Park is charging for police and fire services for the day. An estimated 20,000 people are expected to make the two and a half mile climb on Sunday.
"For the people of El Paso that have never been here it's quite an awesome sight to see 20,000 people at one time coming up and you can see the faith in people's eyes and you see what it means to them. A lot of people do it for personal reasons, for personal favors, to say thanks," said Rubon Escandon of the Mt. Cristo Rey Restoration Committee.
The pilgrimage begins at ten with mass at noon.

So is it really going to cost the restoration committee $20,000 to cover what the City of Sunland Park is going to charge for police & fire protection? I think the fee should be commensurate with what the City of Sunland Park is charging. What is next being charged at the door to go to church, to confession etc.? They already charge for a lot of what they do (and they say they do it out of the goodness of their heart-PLEASE - I was not born yesterday).
