EL PASO- The drug company Pfizer sent out a recall notice yesterday to pull birth control pills off shelves across the country. An error during manufacturing could fail to give women the protection they're counting on. NewsChannel Nine spoke with a local pharmacist and a physician to find out what kind of impact we're talking about.

Pfizer, the drug company known for making Viagra, Lipitor and Advil is recalling birth control pills that go by the names Lo/Ovral, Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol. Pfizer says the mistake occurred during packaging. In result, some of the pills might be out of order or inactive.

"Anybody taking this product right now would result in contraceptive failure so they could possibly get pregnant if they're taking these products,” said Daniel Soto, a pharmacist in El Paso. He says this happens often, at least once a week. "They notify us and we go through the shelves, take them off the shelves and and send it back to the manufacturer."

None of the recall pills were in stock when we visited Sun Drugs.

What happens if you've been taking the birth control and you find out it doesn't work?

"Look at your birth control and identify who the manufacturer is, call your doctor." OBGYN Rebecca Montes said. She takes pride in her patients trusting her when she prescribes them anything. "It's frustrating as a physician to know that you know you have a patient on a certain birth control and to find out they're not adequately protected."

Pfizer has posted a voluntary recall of the pills on its website and on YouTube. The company suggests any woman who's been using one of these pills should begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately.

The mix-up affects 28 lots of birth control pills: 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets.
