The Human Society of El Paso started the new year off by opening their doors on a day when they would normally be closed.
Officials at the Humane Society say about 18,000 to 20,000 dogs and cats are wondering the streets of El Paso county. One solution is increased spay and neuteoring of pets. One message the organization would like to spread is the resposnibility of owning a pet shouldn't be taken lightly.
"If you take an animal into your home, it's a lifetime commitment for that animal. Animal's are not disposable property," said the executive director of the Humane Society Betty Hoover.
By the way, the first pet to adopted this year was a cat named Roxy.
