For the first time in months, Sunland Park has a working mayor.
24-year-old Javier Perea took his oath of office Monday morning after city council appointed him last week.
Less than a week ago, Perea walked into the city council meeting and asked to be Sunland Park's new mayor.
The city clerk gave Perea his oath of office. That's a requirement former mayor elect Daniel Salinas couldn't meet because bail restrictions prevented him from talking with city employees.
Perea graduated from NMSU only two years ago, and he's taking on the task to rid Sunland Park of corruption.
Perea says he knows some people are skeptical he's the right man for the job, but he's confident he will succeed.
"This is not the first time that a 24-year-old has been placed into office. It has happened before, and just because I'm 24 doesn't mean that I'm not professional. It doesn't mean I'm not mature. I can definitely pull this off,” said Perea.
Perea says he plans to work as many as 50 hours a week at City Hall.
The new mayor says the first item on his agenda is to meet with city department leaders to identify Sunland Park's biggest problems..
