The pecan harvesting season is well underway in the Mesilla Valley after a strong hard freeze after Thanksgiving and several freezes since then.

This season's crop is estimated to be about 40 percent smaller than last year but the quality will be still be good.

"It's going to be off a little bit from what we had last year," said New Mexico Pecan Growers Association President Phillip Arnold. "The quality is going to be a little bit better."

The size of crops are typically cyclical with this season being a down year.

Arnold said the weather has been cooperating with cold but dry temperatures making it easier for crews to gather their crops.

If weather conditions continue, most crops will be harvested by Christmas.

New Mexico accounts for up to 20 percent of pecans in the country.
