The District Clerk's Office will no longer be holding passport fairs on the weekend, and if you still need to apply for a passport, you have to do so by appointment only.
This decision comes after El Paso County Commissioners voted 2 to 2 against District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez' request for overtime pay for employees who work the passport fairs on Saturdays. Workers had been given comp time instead of overtime pay.
The office closed Monday afternoon and passport applicants were turned away. Sanchez says his office needs time to catch up on paperwork from hundreds of passport applications. Sanchez told our media partners at the El Paso Times the service could resume on June 15, but when it does, all applicants will be required to make an appointment.
The District Clerk's Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..
