EL PASO - The city's passport agency will not be open for several more months but the excitement is already building.

A pre-opening event took place at the agency's future site at the Pioneer Plaza downtown.

The El Paso passport agency will issue U.S. passport books and cards to customers who have an urgent need to travel within 14 days.

"When they go to acceptance facilities, which are the post offices and clerks of court, it normally takes them anywhere from 4-6 weeks to get the passport book or card processed," said Jacqueline Harley-Bell of passport operations. "It'll be more convenient for them having a passport agency in their own backyard."

The new passport agency is scheduled to open in March.
