Passenger Killed in Rollover Near Clint

Socorro Officials confirmed that one man was killed in an overnight single vehicle rollover along I-10 East near the Clint exit, in Far East El Paso County.

Socorro Police have identified the driver as Oscar Bilbao, who was in his mid-twenties.

Socorro Spokesman David Garcia said the victim died from severe head injuries, after he was thrown out of the Ford F250 diesel truck.  Bilbao reportedly became trapped underneath the truck after it burst into flames.

"County deputies did pull the victims from the wreckage and the fire, and the fire department put out the fire, then Socorro Police arrived to investigate," Garcia said.

According to Garcia, the driver of the pickup, identified as Daniel Serrano, 18, was driving along Gateway East at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday when he lost control.

"What we understand by a witness, is that possibly two cars were headed down the Gateway, possibly, she said, in an illegal contest for speed, when she only saw the truck lose control, head off the median, come back, get on, flip three times and burst into flames," said Garcia.
Garcia said the Socorro Police Department's policy is to conduct an alcohol test in all fatal accident investigations.

At this point, investigators said there is no indication that alcohol, or even speed, are factors.

Serrano, the driver, remains in the hospital with serious injuries.
