More than one week after five Fort Bliss soldiers were killed in Afghanistan, the family of Army Specialist Isela Rubalcalva honored the nine year anniversary of her death in Iraq.

Rubalcalva was killed in a mortar attack on May 8, 2004 while serving during Operation Iraqi freedom.

It was just three days before she would have celebrated her 26th birthday.

Her parents held a mass in her memory on Sunday, and said they have celebrated Isela's birthday every year since she was born.

Isela's father, Ramon Rubalcalva, said he still has a hard time dealing with his daughter's death, but he did have a special message for the family members of the Fort Bliss soldiers who were killed on May 4.

"I would tell them to ask God for strength, a lot of strength, because that's what we need. All of the families that have lost loved ones, we need a lot of strength, and also the support of the community," said Ramon.

A memorial service for the soldiers will be held at the 1AD Chapel on Fort Bliss on May 22.
