Paranormal Activity
Low budget movie makes high dollar profit...
Audiences are freaking-out and flocking to see the new horror movie "Paranormal Activity"
The hot new flick has already sold more than 84 million tickets.
While the story on the screen is an intense thriller the story of the movie behind the scenes is getting almost as much attention.
Many comparing the concept and documentary style of the movie to the ground-breaking "Blair Witch Project" released almost a decade earlier.
While the fear in the new horror thriller takes some time to reach its peak, the frenzy over the movie is growing at a much faster pace.
The low budget film that started with an internet promotional campaign to garner nationwide screenings is now playing to sold out theaters and recently topped the charts as the number one movie in America, earning more than 65-million dollars.
In an industry where star power, massive production crews ,and multi-million dollar budgets are the norm, the most abnormal thing about paranormal activity may be the way the film was made. Only five people worked on the project, including its two unknown actors, and the total cost was only about $15,000 dollars.
"It's a very hard thing to bring off. And of course part of what is so exciting about a movie like Paranormal Activity is that it does come out of nowhere, it wasn't over-hyped, it wasn't made by the system," said Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly.
Of course none of that would matter if audiences didn't like what they saw on the screen.
"It ranks up there. It's better than run of the mill because we've become such a slasher flick society," said moviegoer George Francis.
"it was pretty scary. I think I got a stress ulcer from it," said Christina Grier who recently saw the film.
Part of the appeal seems to be the "grit" of a homemade movie.
Still Paranormal hasn't escaped all the trappings of a Hollywood blockbuster.
Paramount which owns the film says there's already talk of a sequel.
Several entertainment websites say Paranormal Activity is now the most profitable movie ever overtaking the Blair Witch Project.
