O'Rourke on DOE's EPISD audit: "I will press them"
EL PASO, Texas — Congressman Beto O'Rourke wants the U.S. Department of Education to stop delaying and turn in its audit of the El Paso Independent School District.
The D.O.E. has been investigating for two years now with no final audit turned in.
Former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia was indicted and eventually plead guilty to defrauding the government in a scheme that pushed some students out of the classroom in order to raise scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test.
Beto O'Rourke told NewsChannel 9 he spoke with the D.O.E.'s liasion on his first day on the job.
"It couldn't be more important the Education Department to release those findings now or as soon as possible, and I will press them to do that," he said.
He says if he doesn't get any results soon, he will press the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for answers.
