Only on 9: Parents Upset About Sex Ed Lesson

It's a touchy subject for any parent, SEX. Newschannel 9 found out some parents are finding out their kids got a graphic lesson about "sex" without their permission
It's state law in Texas that parents be given the opportunity to exclude their children from sex education at school.
Speaking for his parents Alan Gonzalez says his 13 year-old sister was appalled when she attended a sex ed presentation at Valley View Middle School.
"She said that they were showing them pictures of STD's, pictures of graphic, you know really the private regions, things like that," Gonzalez said.
According to Gonzalez his parents didn't sign a permission slip and had no knowledge the presentation was going to be given.
According to Texas law every school district is supposed to notify parents that sex education is going to be taught and the parent has the right to remove their student if they don't want them to attend.
For Robert Martinez he thought by not returning the permission slip he was declining permission and he expected his child to be pulled from the sex education lesson.
"She's young, barely 12 years-old, I think it should be done when you're 16, when your in high school," Martinez said.
A spokesperson for the Ysleta Independent School District sent us this statement:
"Yesterday at Valley View Middle School, the El Paso Department of Public Health conducted the first of six components of a sex health education class for seventh and eighth graders that offers abstinence-based, factual information for middle school students. This program is approved by the District's School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). Student permission slips were distributed to students the last week of school before winter break. There was a decision at the campus level to allow the introductory presentation to be made to all students. The follow-up components will only be given to those students who turned in their permission slips." --Pat Ayala
But parents like Robert Martinez don't agree with that decision.
Martinez thought by declining permission for his daughter to attend sex ed she would not be included in the lesson.
"If they are going to send you those forms, and they're still going to go ahead with it, then why are they sending those forms?" Martinez said.
We also heard from an anonymous teacher, who told us he/she was concerned about the lesson and said teachers weren't told ahead of time. They were later bombarded with questions from students, questions at least this one teacher wasn't prepared to answer.
According to students and teachers, the subject matter was very graphic and slides were used.
Newschannel 9 has not been able to see the actual presentation, but we've been told it included information about sexual violence, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. There was also information on oral and anal sex.
Stay tuned to Newschannel 9 as we continue to investigate this story.

You know, of course, I agree that parents should choose is sexual school education ok or not ok for their children.
But, I do not know situation in Texas, but in London there are tones of children (15-16 years old) who are already mothers.
And for them it's too late to explain anything :(, so I personally believe that school sexual education is great idea for 12-16 children.

3 months agoSex education is needed in schools to aware kids on the ongoing situation around the world. But parents should be informed about this. Apart from this discussion I came to visit a site called London Escort Agencies, is this good or bad I don't know but one thing is sure its better then the streets.

2 months agoThis is getting a real problem, not only in the US but has become an international problems. Children are children and they don't know what they are really going through. Girls are exploited with sex and harassment is increasing day by day. Sex education should be in schools, authorized by their parents to warn about the ongoing situation. Recently only, I have come to know that there are London Escort Agencies nowadays in UK, I don't know whether this is good or bad, but its better then the streets that for sure

2 months agoParents need to realize it's not the 60's kids aren't going to want to hear about the birds and the bees from their parents, i had sex ed in junior high over a few days in health class all the boys got together in one class the girls in another then another day they brought us all together and we saw some pretty detailed videos of what happens inside a person when well you know and i don't know how they filmed it but it was quite graphic. My friend in the UK said they had some london escorts come to talk to them which is pretty brilliant if you ask me since in all honesty how much about sex do teachers really know other then whats in a text book?

7 months agoThese parents should thank their lucky stars that the kids were in a controlled environment and not out on the streets learning this stuff. If Parents can allow their kids to watch "R" rated movies, curse worse than a Sailor, walk around in tight fitting clothing (which they purchased), have boyfriends and hicky's on their necks, then they should allow them to view the educational tapes that are available to their kids. There are some parents who don't feel comfortable talking to their kids about this subject. Maybe some of the parents don't remember signing the permission slips and maybe some of the kids forged the parents signature. Who's to say. I'd rather have them learn this at school and come to me the parent if they have any questions and both of us explore this together. Parents are too busy being their childs friend than "BEING THE PARENT" they need in their lives. Least we remember the group of 9-13 y/o who thought that oral sex was deemed "safe sex" until they started coming up with diseases and parents were running around like a chicken with their heads cut off trying to blame everyone but themselves.

10 months agoI STRONGLY agree with Sex Education in schools. In case some viewers haven't looked into the topic, Texas is ranked in the top 5 U.S states with the highest teenage pregnancy rate. In college I did a research paper on teens having sex and the affects (teenage pregnancy and STD's)and had the privaledge to interview a few teenagers. Most had similar stories, they had very little or no sex education. What little they did have, they had heard from their friends or from watching television. I interviewed a few teen mothers and they mainly said that they believed that if they had had more knowledge they would have waited. I also interviewed a teenager that received genital warts from her first sexual partner and kept it a secret from her parents until it went into an advanced stage. Most also said that they couldn't talk to their parents because their parents would accuse them of wrong doing. Not to make this story much longer, my point is that some kids don't know how to talk with their parents about Sex and Std's so most are relieved to hear from it at school!

10 months agoparents still have the legal right to determine/choose which is the most appropriate sex ed route for their child. A school principal does not have the right to ignore district and state policy. teachers cannot show educational PG13 videos in class and yet this principal feels it's ok to allow a graphic penis be shown with a blister on it?She should be reprimanded and not have the district cover up the mess. Additionally, 2 hours notice for a parent meeting is also unacceptable. Most parents work and will be unable to attend. Geez,This was probably done in hopes no one would be able to attend. Not Right!

10 months agoI think parents should really open their eyes to this matter. If you are not educating your children on SEX ED they will be looking else where. With Texas being the second highest state in TEEN pregnancy I cannot believe that parents are so narrow minded about sex education in the class room. This should be a REQUIREMENT!

10 months agoYou should give parents more credit. Narrow minded? Education involves parents at all levels.

10 months agoWell if you would have read the story correctly, you would have noticed that us parents weren't notified of the SEX ED course...and that is what we need to take up with the School.
