It's hard to get a college degree when you have to work 40 hours a week. A new program that's starting at UTEP allows people to get their bachelors degree online.
Sergio Ortiz has enjoyed fighting fires for last seven years. He loves his job, but once upon a time, he was in school. He was working towards a degree. "I've been out of the University for now five years," said Ortiz.
You see, he's wanted to battle blazing fire's for a long time. When opportunity knocked, he dropped out of school to pursue his dream. Five years later he tried to go back and finish his bachelor's degree, but his job is demanding, and of course so is school. "It's tough to miss work and attend school," said Ortiz.
Sergio came to a crossroads, and almost had to choose between the job he loves and his continued education. Then UTEP started up a program that allowed him to continue going to school online.
We're not just talking about taking random classes online. This program,(the Bachelor Multi Disciplinary Studies Program), helps people with existing credits get their bachelor's degree with ever showing up at school.
This program is geared towards people like Sergio who work too many hours to spend time here at school.
UTEP says about 80% of their students are from El Paso and many of those students have to work more than 20 hours a week to help support their families. A lot of people drop out with the intention of coming back. For one reason or another, they can't. Even if they can, it takes them too long to graduate.
"Now that this online was offered, I have a better chance to finishing up faster," said Ortiz.
