CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (KRIS) — Six people were killed and nine were injured, some critically, in a car crash early Thursday morning in Kleberg County.

At around 12:33 a.m., the Department of Public Safety was called to a crash on FM 1356 east of US 77.

On Wednesday night around 11:15 p.m., a pickup truck holding 15 people, including the driver, was traveling eastbound in an attempt to escape Kingsville police and the U.S. Border Patrol when they made a wrong turn down General Cavazos Boulevard leading to the NAS-Kingsville Base.

A Navy police officer tried to stop the truck from entering the base, but the driver went through the first checkpoint. Security was notified to set up a barrier designed to stop vehicles from unathorized access to the station at the second checkpoint. The truck ignored security warnings and sped into the barricade. Six people were killed instantly and those injured were taken to local hospitals by ambulance or air.

NAS-Kingsville Fire and Emergency Resuce were at the scene within minutes to extract the victims from the wreckage. The Kingsville Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, Texas Department of Public Safety, the Kleberg County Sheriff and Kleberg County Coroner were also on site.

U.S. Border Patrol is classifying the passengers as undocumented immigrants. The investigation is being led by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The NAS-Kingsville front gate is open to inbound traffic only. The Caesar Street gate is open to both incoming and outoging traffic until further notice.
