Once-convicted killer spends first Sunday out of prison in church
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Now free on bond, Daniel Villegas spent his first Sunday as a free man in church on Sunday morning.
Villegas and his family sang hymns and prayed for an hour at St. Pius X Church. He says the statues of the Saints in the church are his inspiration to become a better person.
"That's why I just kept staring up at them and just like "aahh" these guys, they went through hell and back just like I did and they're a testament. And hopefully, I won't be as good as them, but hopefully, I can be a quarter as good as they were," he said.
Villegas also told NewsChannel 9 he has been learning how to use many of today's technology ever since he got out of prison, like emails, texting, and cell phones.
He is currently out on bond but the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has recommended Villegas receive a new trial.
The El Paso District Attorney's Office has not yet decided if they will prosecute Villegas.
