Dona Ana County - Sheriff's deputies discovered what appeared to be a bomb in the desert 20 miles south of Las Cruces.
A Fort Bliss bomb squad identified it as a World War Two era munition.
The bomb may have fallen from an aircraft more than 60 years ago. It was still live.
The bomb was destroyed and left a 3' by 6' crater and sent a plume of smoke 200 foot into the air.
