Homeless Man Found Shoeless Again
NEW YORK — A brief moment of kindness made a lasting impression on the web after a passerby captured a NYPD officer offering shoes to a barefoot, homeless man in Times Square.
"It was freezing. And ah, the first thing I thought was like this is absolutely unacceptable," said Officer Lawrence DePrimo. "Um so I went up to him, and I was like where are your socks, where are your shoes, or anything?"
DePrimo, 25, disappeared for a moment, then returned with a new pair of boots which he helped the man put them on.
The act of kindness would have gone unnoticed, if not for Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Arizona who snapped the picture and posted it on the NYPD's Facebook page.
DePrimo said he had no idea the picture was taken.
But the New York Times found the man barefoot again Sunday night, according to NBC News. He was identified as Jeffrey Hillman, and he explained he took them off because they were worth too much money, and that he could lose his life over them.
Hillman said he was an Army veteran but did not explain how he ended up homeless.
