EL PASO - Dozens of Occupy El Paso protesters packed into City Hall today to apply for a new permit to protest. But it was another issue entirely that got them so worked up.
Today city council voted to make the Downtown Management District responsible for issuing special event permits in the Downtown area, for events like StreetFest. The DMD is made up of business owners. And Occupy El Paso worries that the DMD doesn't want to grant them another permit to protest.
"The DMD is putting pressure on the city council to shut us down because they don't want us protesting. They don't want us visible. And they city is giving the DMD control over it," said protester Wiley Driskell.
The city says the protesters are confused, because the DMD wouldn't be issuing permits for events like protests in parks.
"All of those sorts of activities that really are about people being engaged and people saying what they want to say and how they want to say it, all of those will still be handled by the city," said representative Susie Byrd.
She says at this point the city has no plans to renew Occupy El Paso's permit at San Jacinto Plaza because the park is already booked up with holiday events.
