EL PASO - During his speech at Chamizal this afternoon, President Obama pledged to fight for the controversial Dream Act.

The Dream Act was a bill that would have granted citizenship to young illegal immigrants who chose to either study, or serve in the military. It failed to pass through Congress this past December.

While the president said he isn't in the business of separating families, some people in the hispanic community are asking why he didn't push for that measure harder, and sooner.

"This should have happened...in the run up to the Dream Act, actually having its last push as we tried to get this passed. The president should have spoken in a similar way to what we are currently experiencing in El Paso, back then. Not now," said Hector Lopez, from the National Hispanic Institute.

Leaders at NHI also said they question whether immigration reform and measures like the Dream Act will ever be passed.

What fight? He cannot push for this due to the fact that Republicans hold the House and will not allow it to go on. Another promise being broken by obumer?

How dare he!

This is a straight up rewarding of illegal activity. Will the drug dealers & gang bangers be the next set of criminals to get rewarded?

Stop wasting tax payer dollars!

If this will be passed the requirement should be a minimum of 10 years in a military hot zone without an option for going to school as an option for citizenship.
