Students at UTEP kicked off a new semester with a new president. Many took the time out of their schedule to pause and watch history in the making.

Cheers broke out on campus as Barack Obama became the United States' 44th leader and the country's first African-American president.

For Cheryl Howard, a student at UTEP, the experience was something she never expected in her lifetime.

"I have grandchildren. So, in my mind, it would be by the time they grew up. But, to actually live through it and see it myself, I don't have the words to explain it," she said.

Other students say it was a time of unity.

"What I saw today was very warming, it gave me the sense that people really do care," said Topher Hartfield.

"In the speech he talked about unity and you could really feel it in the room. You could tell that history was made today and we're going to be talking about this forever," said Michael Martinez.
