North and South Korea Exchange Fire

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 - 7:27am

North Korea opened fire on a South Korean island today near their disputed western border.

The artillery attack killed at least one South Korean marine.  There are reports of wounded South Korean soldiers and civilians.

Around 1,200 people live on the island.

South Korea responded with their own artillery barrage and scrambled several F-16 fighters.

No U.S. military personnel were involved in the fighting.

North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950 to 1953 Korean War ended with a ceasefire, not a peace treaty.
