NMSU reaches 125-year milestone
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State University reached a milestone as an institution of higher learning celebrating its 125th anniversary on Tuesday.
From humble beginnings as a small college opening September 17 ,1888, to now a premier institution of higher learning, NMSU has had it's share of historic moments during the years.
"It's nice to really know there's a lot of tradition," said NMSU Freshman Cody Slater.
The school first opened under the name Las Cruces College and after a couple more names officially changed from New Mexico State University of Agriculture, Engineering and Science, to just New Mexico State University in 1960.
The school's mustached gunslinger, Pistol Pete, first appeared at a football game against Utah State in 1973.
